To boost consumption, increase the purchasing power of families

We welcome the optimism of Minister Catania, who declared today how he expects "in 2013, a gradual recovery in consumption, in parallel with a return to growth". We would like to point out to the Minister, however, that given the serious situation facing Italian families, the recovery in consumption is very far (even some illustrious economists expect it not before 2015) and, in any case, will certainly not "fall from sky".

Indeed, in light of the increase in VAT that will occur during the next year, everything suggests a further contraction. A perspective confirmed on several fronts: from the now unstoppable drop in purchasing power, which decreased by more than -13.2% from 2008 to today; the contraction even of food consumption that, as we will never tire of stressing, they are the last ones to be affected in case of crisis. The worrying trend of unemployment and production in Italy (obvious consequence of this dramatic situation), only confirm the hypothesis of an even worse 2013 of the past year.

This is why it is essential to act immediately and decisively to re-launch the purchasing power of families and the economy of our country, through a recovery in investments for technological development and research. "In the serious phase in which we find ourselves, relying on false hopes and optimism is an unforgivable mistake, and to pay the consequences are likely to be, for the umpteenth time, families." – declare Rosario Trefiletti and Elio Lannutti. The worrying trend of unemployment and production in Italy (obvious consequence of this dramatic situation),
